FAQ's

What is unique about your services versus other nutritionists?

We focus on the WHOLE system, not just its parts. There is much more to health than just the food you eat. We take physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional factors into play. If you go to a typical “nutritionist”, they are going to teach you to increase vegetables and drink more water… that only skims the surface as to what we teach our clients for ultimate health and vitality. There is also a motivational and spiritual key that is not typically taught with basic nutrition education. If you are constantly stressed out and anxious, eating a salad won’t do much for your overall health and happiness.

Uh-oh, you said the word spiritual. Now I think you are a huge hippie. Are you going to burn sage around me and sing kumbaya as I leave the office?

No, but that’s a great idea! Many people get nervous when they hear the word spiritual. The truth is that thoughts dictate all behaviors. If you want to change your behaviors, you need to learn how to think different thoughts. To us, the word “spiritual” means the connection you have to your inner guide and to the universe around you. Connecting to your body is vital for long-lasting health and of course, for thought shifting. Namaste.

What is the purpose of the ten day food detoxification? Why is this so important? Would you ever advise I go on the Master Cleanse or take a detoxification supplement program?

First, let us say that not every client will wind up doing a ten day detoxification program. It depends on your goals and the reason why you are coming in. The body stores toxins (from chemicals in our food and from the environment) in your adipose (fat) tissue. When you eat to support the body's natural detoxification process, we enable your system to burn fat, retain less water and dramatically increase energy. The purpose of the ten day detoxification is more than just increasing energy and flushing toxins. It also resets your insulin (blood sugar) levels, reduces food cravings and provides you with a mental refocus to a more balanced diet. Don’t let the word “detox” scare you; it’s just ten days of clean eating with some fun tricks to help your body get rid of the junk.

I love to eat chocolate, drink beer and eat meat. Are you going to force me to stop doing that?

Well, are you going to force us to give up French fries?!? The key to health and longevity is balance and happiness. It is our job to show you how to achieve ultimate health without compromising your balance, or your happiness.

I am a vegetarian but don’t know if I am eating a balanced diet. Can you help?

There are vegetarians and there are "Carbotarians”. Did you know that you could be a vegetarian without eating one vegetable?! Regardless of food preference, there is a healthy program for any type of eater. Through the Lifestyle Assessment we can work together to ensure you are getting an adequate amount of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. Vegetarians need to watch for deficiencies of iron, B vitamins, and amino acids. Getting adequate amounts of these nutrients are simple with a responsible vegetarian diet. We can also help you with new vegetarian meal combinations and ideas that get you out of any potential food rut!

There is so much controversy over being vegetarian vs. going Paleo. What diet are you going to put me on?

First, let us say that a diet is something you go “on” and “off” of. Our foundational principles and conscious eating guidelines arm you with the tools for long lasting health. It is not something to be mastered; it is to be practiced every day. We always laugh when clients tell us they are going on vacation and are leaving their diets at home. Are they also leaving their toothbrushes?! Are they not packing their diet in their suitcase?! The only way to have permanent change is to shift your lifestyle, not follow a diet. Of course we are going to give you guidelines, but the real focus will be on thought and behavior modification, so that ultimately you don’t feel like you are on a diet at all.

So really, what lifestyle do you want me to follow?

We do not believe in the “one size fits all approach”. Every person requires an individual plan, although everyone will learn the basics of a “no crap diet”. Your food recommendations will be specific to your body at the moment with whatever imbalances are present. Trumping any diet book, we will teach you how to listen to your body so that when your needs change, you can effortlessly change your nutrition.

I like to get a little tipsy every once in a while. Is it okay to “save up” my alcohol allowance and drink a few at a time as opposed to your normal guidelines?

This is a question about moderation. My main goal is to teach you moderation... not an extreme healthy lifestyle. Anything extreme (be it healthy or unhealthy) cannot be sustained. Health is about balance at the core, whether that means a chocolate bar or getting "buzzed" once in a while. Anything that is too rigid breaks, and the famous Maya Angelou once said “everything in moderation… even moderation in moderation.”

Should I expect any detoxification side effects, such as increased allergies, headaches, and fatigue or acne problems? If so, how long should this last before I feel better?

Some individuals will feel these symptoms to a certain degree and some will feel fantastic within the second or third day. Everyone is unique therefore each person's detoxification experience will be different. Detoxification signs sometimes show up in skin, energy levels, bowel movements, mood, etc... Most symptoms usually subside after six days.

Am I going to have to give up coffee?

We’re not telling.

Do you work with kids?

Are you kidding?! We are kids on the inside (insert fart joke and wild amounts of giggling). We work with children all the time. Check out our sister biz, Nut Wiz Kids!

Do you take insurance?

We are a “fee for service” clinic meaning that we do not accept insurance and you will have to pay the fee at the time of service. We will however provide you with the information you need to submit it to your insurance, and we do accept flex and wellness cards.

Will your nutrition program help me manage my Type II Diabetes?

We have wellness programs specialized for Diabetics. Unlike Dietitians, we do not focus on counting carbohydrates and dieting. Managing and overcoming Diabetes is about a lifestyle change. In our clinical practice we have seen many Diabetics who have had dramatic results in their blood glucose levels as well as other biomarkers of health (see our success stories). We believe the wellness program that we provide is one of the best ways to treat and prevent Type 2 Diabetes.

What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) must complete four years of undergraduate schooling with an internship as well as pass the nationwide dietitian exam. The coursework is taught from the Dietetic Association whose beliefs differ greatly from holistic teachings. Dietitians usually work in hospitals and schools or public health settings. Counseling is going to vary with each individual practitioner and should not be judged by the grouping of certification. As in any medical setting, we’ve met great and not so great doctors and nutritionists. We don't agree with the RD basic education, but that doesn't mean we look down on anyone with this certification. Carly did her undergraduate degree within the mainstream nutrition curriculum as well. Instead of taking the dietetic exam, she wanted more education reflecting eastern medicine principles. She then received a Master’s Degree in Holistic Nutrition, became certified through the CHEK Institute as a Holistic Lifestyle Coach and finally passed a very brutal course and exam to be certified as a Certified Clinical Nutritionist.

What do I bring to my first appointment?

We will have you fill out and bring the new client forms (yes all of them!), along with any recent blood or lab work. Please be well hydrated to ensure the accuracy of the body composition analysis (we will know how hydrated you are by your number of trips to the restroom!).

How many appointments do I need?

This will depend on your goals, the reason why you are coming in, as well as how much accountability you need/want. In our sessions, we dive deep into nutrition education, habit re-patterning as well as mental tools that will stick with you for life. After you complete the Wellness Starter Program, you will have the option of choosing coaching packages as short as 6 weeks to as long as 6 months. Most clients continue coaching long after they have met their goals.

What results can I expect from the program in general?

Oh, not much, just ongoing health, happiness, peace of mind and a kick-arse mentality!

Do you work with athletes?

We continuously work with world-class athletes. Carly spent years as the nutritionist for LIVESTRONG Foundation Headquarters, she coaches the Olympic athlete qualifiers in Austin (Rogue Elite Runners) and partners with local fitness professionals.

Do you work with “out of towners”?

We work with clients all over the United States as well as internationally! We can use any video chat software as well as sessions by phone.
